Healthy Ways to Losing Weight

Over 100 million Americans were overweight or obese in 1999. Even now, obesity continues to be a major problem and is predicted to reach epidemic levels by the year 2020.

One way to avoid this scenario is to make every one aware of the risks of being overweight or obese.

Here's some diseases that you put yourself at risk of if you're carrying a lot of extra pounds:

1. heart disease
2. stroke
3. diabetes
4. cancer
5. arthritis
6. hypertension

Losing weight helps to prevent and control these diseases.

The quick and easy weight loss methods which have spread like fire lately don't provide long lasting results. More often than not, dieting methods which include dietary drinks, foods, and supplement or pills don't work. If they do, the results are just temporary, as you just gain that extra weight back.

It's better to rely on a healthy weight loss option which will provide lifetime results. You need to set realistic goals and not plan to lose a lot of pounds in a short amount of time.

Here's some tips on how to lose your unwanted pounds the healthy way:

1. Don't starve yourself.

The key to a healthier way of losing weight is: Don't diet.

You might seem happy and feel that you're losing those unwanted flabs on your belly and thighs by skipping meals. But remember, this won't last long. Your body can't tolerate having insufficient food to fuel the energy that you are using up everyday.

If you start skipping one or two meals a day, your stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that should have been provided by your meals. If you eat just one huge sandwich in one day, it'll end up right at your problem area (i.e. highs, buttocks, hips).

2. Start the day right.

Mothers always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Get a healthy meal in the morning to jump-start your metabolism.

The food you eat after you wake up will be used to burn fat all day long.

3. Eat small, healthy meals frequently.

Five smaller-serving snacks per day is better than three hearty meals. Eating more frequently, and in small servings, can stop over-eating. This will also increase your metabolism rate and make those calories burn faster.

4. Decide on how much weight you want to lose.

Keep your goals realistic. It's just about impossible for you to lose 30 pounds in 30 days, just like it takes way longer than 30 days to gain 30 extra pounds. Have a mindset that you are going to eat healthy so you can stay healthy for the rest of your life.

Once you have decided on a weight loss plan or program, stay to it and make sure that your following your own set of dieting rules.

5. Drink a lot of water.

Your body needs a lot of water to burn fat and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.

6. Avoid a lot of sugar.

Plan your meals around lots of fruits and vegetables, bread, rice or pasta for that carbo fix that you need, plus lean meat and protein rich-foods. Sweets, sodas and pastries should only be once-in-a-while indulgences only.

7. Watch your fat intake.

Fat isn't the culprit to being overweight. You need fat to keep your weight at the proper level.

There is such a thing as good fats. Olive, peanuts and canola oil have these. Tuna, salmon and mackerel have omega-3 fats which is good for the heart.

8. Exercise.

Don't drive your car if you're only going a few blocks from home. Take those stairs instead of taking the elevator, jog, cycle or skate. Use these activities and other home chores if you're too lazy to get over to the gym and take exercise classes. Make sure that you do this regularly and you won't even notice that you're already shedding pounds with these calorie burning activities.

It doesn't matter how much weight you plan or need to get rid of. What's important is that you set realistic goals for yourself.

Go slow. If you've already lost 5 or 6 pounds, give yourself a little break then try to lose another 5 pounds. Rince and repeat!

Eat healthy, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and exercise. This will give you a much higher odds of losing that extra weight, and improving your health, which would result to a new, healthier you.
